California Cherries

California Cherry Advisory Board Executive Manager Jim Culbertson sent the following report and photos overnight: Current conditions are cool and sunny with the ten day forecast showing continued mild weather. This will prove to be a growers dream as the harvest increases in the Stockton-Linden-Lodi area. Over the weekend conditions and temperatures gave us a perfect storm which moved out leaving little or no damage to the Bing crop and most other cherries.

The latest crop estimate puts us on track for a Bing crop of 2.1 million (18lb) cartons.

Looking at the orchards today, the first three weeks of June look to be when the bulk of the California Cherry crop will be harvested. Enjoy the enclosed pictures taken today and prepare for the long anticipated Bing season!

Northwest Cherries

During his recent visit to Australia and New Zealand, Northwest Cherrygrowers President BJ Thurlby said a great crop will be available this season the Pacific Northwest (mostly Washington and Oregon), with production forecast at 12 million (20lb) cartons.

The Northwest cherry crop is running around nine days late, due to cooler spring weather. Growers expect to begin harvesting early varieties (like Tieton and Chelan) around the 7th June, with volume hitting a week to ten days later. Production is expected to peak on June 27th and continue strong throughout July and into August.

Promotional Suggestion: Recent plantings of late varieties in late districts, combined with the later timing of the 2006 crop, provide the opportunity for Northwest cherry promotions throughout July and into August.
