Early guesses say the California cherry crop could be about two weeks late and as small as 3 million cartons (18lb), according to this week's 'The Packer', the US weekly trade newspaper. This would put it in the neighbourhood of last season's modest crop of 3.5 million cartons.

A normal-sized fresh cherry crop would be 6 million to 7 million cartons, said Jim Culbertson, executive manager of the California Cherry Advisory Board. The CCAB Board is meeting this week and a more accurate forecast will then be circulated.
A lot of the reduced production is with early varieties at the front end of the season, in late April and May. Marketers said this season's crop will offer plenty of promotion opportunities in June.
Promotions with Australian independent retailers will kick off in the week of 5 June. New "Cherish the Thought…" point of sale (A3 and A4 posters, consumer leaflets) and merchandising guides will be distributed through merchandisers visiting stores, as well as through California cherry wholesalers.

This season is shaping as an excellent year for cherry growers in the Northwest (Washington, Oregon and Idaho). With the crop running 8 to 10 days later than normal, there should be good supplies in the market from late June and running well into August.
Northwest Cherry Growers president BJ Thurlby is in Australia and New Zealand this week and we should obtain a more up-to-date picture during his visit.
