The earliest fruit to arrive in the market over the weekend gave the California cherry season a promising start before the rain came earlier this week. It's now sunny and warm in California with similar weather expected through the weekend. This should help the majority of the Bings to ripen. James Christie from California Cherries has been in some the cherry production areas for the last two days and has very positive news to report. The Bing trees he saw were "loaded with large-sized fruit that is just getting ready to be picked." Be prepared for ample volumes in the next 10-15 days. The bulk of the Bing harvest will likely occur in the next two weeks.
PROMOTION: Support for retailers, delivering key messages to consumers through food writers and broadcasters, plus keeping the trade up to date with seasonal developments are the main elements of this year's activities.
Retail: Point of Sale posters (A3 size - see photo) will be delivered to cherry wholesalers next week for distribution to their retail customers. Shelf wobblers will also be available. Merchandisers will also be visiting over 300 stores in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide to distribute POS materials.
Consumers: Short lead media (press, radio and television) are being supplied with images (see photo) and copy, promoting the availability and health benefits of California cherries.

With the bloom period and pollination complete, the Northwest Cherry crop is beginning to take shape. Throughout the region, cherries are forming, but as this picture of some cherries in Wenatchee shows they still have some way to go. Growers are reporting fewer fruits per cluster this season, which should indicate opportunity for larger sizing.
Initial production is expected to begin at the end of May in the early districts, with volume available 10 days to two weeks later. Shipments are expected to peak on June 23rd and continue strong into August.
