California Cherry Update

From Jim Culbertson, Executive Manager, California Cherry Advisory Board, Lodi

"While California has continued to experience a rather wet spring, most all of the cherries have escaped any rain damage. Currently, Brooks are being harvested and shipped. This first to harvest variety has met with a fair amount of rain damage. Looking over our pack outs for Japan as a reference point, we began packing one day earlier than last year and we are currently 28% behind last seasons pack out volume.

The Board of Directors met last Wednesday and determined that the crop State wide was estimated to be down 20%. This still leaves a good volume of cherries to come from the Golden State. It would appear that cherry volume will be light for the next week and a half. Substantial Bing volume should begin May 19-21. Cool weather has made the cherries very firm with good fruit size.

Our long range weather forecast is still calling for periods of potential rain and we will report on that if it comes about. The accompanying picture reflects the current stage that the Bings are in. Much of the fruit is colouring up with a fair amount of green fruit still to mature. We'll keep sunshine in our thoughts as we move ahead."

PROMOTIONS: In the next issue we will provide details of the upcoming trade, retail and consumer promotion activities.

Northwest Cherry Update

"The Northwest Cherry crop continues to progress as the season nears. Although all of the early indicators point to an exceptional crop out of the Northwest, fieldmen are still trying to get a feel for what kind of set will stick after the bloom.

At this point, the industry expects to have a crop that is comparable to the 2003 and the 2004 seasons - both of which saw 11 million 20 pound boxes shipped out of the Northwest.

Regarding timing: Growers in the Northwest expect to begin picking at the end of May in the early districts, with volume available 10 days to two weeks later. Shipments are expected to peak on June 23rd and continue strong into August."
