Jim Culbertson from California Cherry Advisory Board is very upbeat about the June shipments of California cherries. He says:
"It's now time for the really big show. The Bing's are rolling your way and we should have three very strong shipping weeks ahead of us. Fruit size is excellent with very good colour and flavour.
The effects of the high heat are gone, wind damage has been limited to a fairly low percentage of the crop and the rain didn't amount to much. Current forecasts call for continued cool temperatures and calm winds. Perfect!
Travels through San Joaquin County on Thursday found bins, ladders, pickers and everything else that signals harvest in full swing. Consumers will be in for a treat during the next month as the Bings roll out in numbers."

Northwest Cherry Growers President BJ Thurlby updates the situation:
"Throughout the Northwest region cherries are developing and, as shown by the webcam picture of Hood River cherries, beginning to show signs of coloration.
The 2008 crop is expected to be somewhere between 9 and 10 million 20 lb. equivalent boxes. This represents a 30% reduction relative to 2007 numbers.
Initial shipments are expected to begin the week of 16 June, with volume available 10 days to two weeks later. Comparatively, 2007 shipments began 2 June.
Preliminary indications suggest that shipments will peak from 29 June to 1 July (compared to 25 June in 2007) and continue strong into August. July and early
August should provide opportunities for promotion.
Look for excellent fruit size and Brix levels in 2008, as the cool spring has provided
a natural bud thinning which will give the cherries an exceptional fruit to leaf ratio throughout development."
