Northwest Cherries

Northwest Cherry Growers report the season is officially underway! The earliest low elevation orchards began to pick their early varieties at the end of last week. Production is expected to ramp up quickly, with the industry shipping 100,000 plus 20lb boxes per day beginning as early as June 16th. Shipments will continue to increase after the 16th until the expected peak shipment date of June 27th.

With more new acreage of late-season, high elevation plantings coming online this season, shipments will continue strong throughout the month of July and into August. In fact, due to the later crop timing this season, the industry expects to ship more cherries this July than ever before.

PMA

Produce Marketing Association's (PMA) Mastering the Supply Chain symposium in Sydney on June 1 brought together more than 164 industry leaders from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Keynote speakers included Steve Junqueiro, Vice President of Operations, Save Mart Supermarkets (a chain of approximately 125 stores in California) and Janet Erikson, Executive Vice President, Purchasing and Quality Assurance, Del Taco (the second largest Mexican restaurant chain in the USA) representing the foodservice sector of the industry.

"Customer satisfaction is about delivering value more so than price," said Junqueiro. "At Save Mart we use extensive market research to identify needs and value and then we try to be the best at delivering the value proposition."

According to Erickson, produce's rise in foodservice has come about because of need for year-round supply in all major and specialty product categories, the maturity of the foodservice business, and the use of new produce products as key to competitive differentiation. Erickson reported, "Foodservice has provided a lot of the innovation in fresh produce. Fresh-cuts is an example. Foodservice businesses are looking for fewer suppliers who can provide a broader spectrum of product year round at consistent prices."
