Northwest Cherry Update

Blue, sunny skies hang over Yakima as cherries roll out of orchards throughout the valley and the Northwest.

The quality of the fruit coming into the warehouses has been exceptional this season, with shippers reporting packout rates in the 85 to 90 percent range. Fruit size has been excellent as well, with the industry looking to peak on 10 and 10.5 row cherries.

In addition to the dark sweets (Bing, Lapin, Sweetheart and Skeena), the Rainier crop is also looking good. The fruit is sizing well and colouring up nicely. Growers have been harvesting Rainiers over the past week and will be moving into more volume on Rainiers over the coming month.
Cherry shipments from the Northwest are running into peak production this week and supplies will continue strongly through July and into August.

Merchandisers are in the field, visiting retailers this week with Point of Sale posters and Retail Guides. Materials are also being distributed through Northwest cherry wholesalers.
